818 - London - John Sharpe, 1817 Book. Good. Hardcover. Two illustratedvolumes of poetry from one of the most popular poets of 18th century England. Cowper is credited with heavily influencing the future direction of English poetry, by writing of common scenes and the real countryside. Having been deemed insane and incarcerated between 1763 and 1765, he became an evangelical Christian. His religion led him to write many hymns. He is also known for his active stance in opposition of slavery. His poetry was quoted by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. many times in the course of the civil rights movement. Condition: In full calf with gilt detailing to the spines and boards. Externally with rubbing to the extremities of the boards and to the spine, where the titles have been effaced. Internally, there are contemporary ink inscriptions to the front blanks, each dated 1825. Generally clean and bright, with a little spotting to the first and last few pages and the plates. Firmly bound. Overall: GOOD.
