New York:: Press of the Pioneers, 1934.. 1st Edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: dark blue (nearly black) cloth with silver text; one corner is well bumped, bookplate, otherwise a Very Good book, no dust jacket. Although the original jacket is not present, a semi-facsimile jacket has been made to help protect the book (facsimile of spine and front panel -- the real jacket has a blank rear panel, this facsimile has a portrait of Tabor).. 8vo (9.25 inches tall) . Index. Description: Includes a frontis and thirteen additional black and white plates. From the author's preface: ''That he [Tabor] was reckless, foolish, idled way much of his youth, squandered a great fortune as if he were an imbecile, fought, gambled, swore, chewed tobacco, drank red liquor, consorted with loose women, divorced an old and quarrelsome wife and married a young and attractive colleen of less than half his age, used his wealth to further his political ambitions, and raised hell generally -- all this merely proved that he belonged in his environment, belonged to that period of the West. He was of a later day but he was akin in spirit to those other adventurers who first explored Colorado -- the early trappers, the mountain men.'' The author lived in Denver when Tabor was at the height of his career. Later, Gandy moved to Leadville, and as Tabor had then been dead only a short time, many tales (mostly false) still circulated. Shortly before his father's death, Gandy learned that his father had known Tabor in 1859, and learned much from him. The author also consulted old issues of local newspapers and hundreds of books.
