Folio, [16.125x22in sheet] Single fold sheet with trapezoid shaped woodcut map on verso (width 15.875 to 18.125in by height 12 to 12.125 in], Latin text between intricate designed border columns on recto [possibly illustrated by Hans Holbein and Graf of Basel]; Water stain on fore edge when folded, minor soiling, several worm holes in fold crease, closed tears at top and bottom of crease line. Paraphrased from the WorldCat records, the map shows pictorial relief, regions and islands, rivers, villages and cities with grid line designations and latitudes; The woodcut maps in this edition were copies from the Martin Waldseemüller maps contained in the Strasbourg, 1513 and the 1522 editions but printed in a smaller scale [by Lorenz Fries]; Maps have descriptive text on either the recto and verso the order of maps in this edition is indicated by a numerical designation following the text on the recto of each [#19 for Tabvla V. Asiae]; The descriptive text on the rectos of the outer forms of the double maps is often framed by an ornamental woodcut border and includes woodcut head and tail piece vignettes.

This Atlas was also edited by Michael Servetus, a Spanish physician and theologian whose unorthodox teachings led to his condemnation as a heretic by both Protestants and Roman Catholics and to his execution by Calvinist [from the Encyclopedia Britannica]. He was also condemned for his writings and editing of books. It was noted by the Library of Congress, that passages contained in the verso of map 41 in this Geographica was used as one of the charges against Servetus when he was burned at the stake in 1553.
