Near immaculate pale grey background with assorted Potter's animal characters white silhouetted illustrated eps - bottom corner of front free endpaper with an accidental but tiny diagonal corner crease. The ffe (front free endpaper) also has an unused printed owner's book label. Top+fore-edges bright and clean; contents bright, tight, clean and pristine - no intentional dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corners - possibly an unread example? UK,slim 24mo (approx up to 5.3/4" tall x 4.1/4" wide) HB, exclusive FSC variant centennial 1st edn thus,6- 69pp [paginated] includes 31 colour illustrations by Beatrix Potter, throughout the text and story.Plus [unpaginated],2pp blanks, character's colour illustrated half-title page, recto of which has a colour pictorial frntis, and a b/w line illustrated title-page. This edition, with reoriginated illustrations and type, marks the centenary of the first publication by Frederick Warne of 'The Tale of Peter Rabbit' in 1902.Taking the first edition as a guide, the aim has been to follow faithfully Beatrix Potter's intentions while benefiting from advances in modern printing and design techniques. The colours and detail of the watercolours are here reproduced more accurately than ever before, and it has now also been possible to disguise damage that has affected the artwork over the years. The text is reset in a period typeface of the right weight to harmonise with the delicacy of the pictures. Most notably, this edition restores 6 extra illustrations.4 of these (pages 10, 18, 49 and 62) were sacrificed in 1903 to make space for illustrated endpapers. The other 2 (pages 33 and 54) have never been used before, Beatrix Potter having initially prepared more illustrations than could be accommodated in the original format. Synopsis

The Tale of Peter Rabbit is a children's book written and illustrated by Beatrix Potter. The story follows Peter Rabbit, a mischievous and disobedient young rabbit, as he ventures into the garden of farmer Mr. McGregor. The tale was written for five-year-old Noel Moore, son of Potter's former governess, in 1893. It was revised and privately printed by Potter in 1901 after several publishers' rejections but was printed in a trade edition by Frederick Warne & Co. in 1902.
