Description:
London: National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations, 1945. Political edition," only printing. Pamphlet. This is an extraordinarily fine example of the only printing of the "Political" edition of this striking wartime speech pamphlet. Published in April, 1945, by the National Union of Conservative and Unionist Associations, this was a campaign piece for the forthcoming General Election, containing Churchill's March 15, 1945 address to the Party Conference at Central Hall, Westminster. It attests to the fact that, as the war in Europe drew toward an inexorable close, the suspended tensions of domestic politics intruded ever more urgently on the politically unified war effort, fracturing the wartime coalition that had acknowledged Churchill as its indispensible Prime Minister. Having done so much to win the war, Churchill faced frustration of his postwar plans when his wartime government fell to Labour in the General Election of July 1945. He would remain Leader of the Opposition until…

Kobenhavn: Steen Hasselbalchs Forlag, 1950. 1st Edition. Paperback. This unusual and important edition contains translations of 4 Churchill's speeches given in Denmark on 9, 10, and 11 October 1950. Only 500 copies were reportedly printed of this first and only edition. Publication is of bibliographic significance to collectors and scholars alike since this is the only published appearance of 3 of the 4 speeches. While in Denmark, Churchill received that country's highest humanitarian award, as well as an honorary degree at Copenhagen University. It is printed on beautiful laid paper with untrimmed edges and bound in gray card wraps. The text is entirely in Danish except for the facsimile of Churchill's handwritten 2-line note of November 1950 on p.7 ("I have a glowing memory of my time in Denmark"). This is also the only published appearance of the note. Condition of this copy is very good. The gray card binding is complete, with no losses or tears. There is slight wear at the corners, a strip of light sunning to the top 1.25 inch of the front cover, and light soiling to the blank rear cover. The contents are pristine with no spotting, markings, or signs of ever being read. The booklet is protected in a removable, archival quality mylar sleeve. Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1949. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Here is a full set of U.S. editions of Churchill's postwar speeches in the scarce dust jackets. These volumes span the period from immediately after the second World War, when Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, through the end of 1952, during his second Premiership. The events encompassed by these years are in many ways no less dramatic than those of the war years - the unraveling of the British Empire, the post-war recovery, the beginning of the Cold War, Soviet acquisition of the atomic bomb and U.S. invention of the hydrogen bomb. The U.S. postwar speeches were published in very small numbers, making jacketed U.S. editions much rarer than their British counterparts. Collectors should note that the U.S. postwar speeches are only four volumes, as the fifth and final volume, The Unwritten Alliance, had no U.S. edition. All four volumes offered here are in fine condition - clean, tight, and square with unfaded bindings, and…

WINNER OF THE PEGASUS PRIZE FOR LITERATURE AND THE BOOKER PRIZE. Used. Very Good/Very Good unclipped original $17.95 dust jacket. Summary: "The Bone People, first published in 1984 by Spiral, New Zealand. About this book: The Bone People is an unusual story of love. It is unusual in the telling, the subject matter, and the form of love that the story depicts. This is in no way a romance; it is filled with violence, fear, and twisted emotions. At the story's core, however, are three people who struggle very hard to figure out what love is and how to find it. Hulme won New Zealand's Pegasus Prize for Literature (1984) for The Bone People. Then the book went on to win the prestigious Booker Prize (1985).
