Philadelphia, nd [ca.1900]: George Barrie & Son. Limited Edition. Octavo. Limited edition #85 of only 250 copies printed on Imperial Japan paper. In six volumes containing twenty original etchings, five photogravures and a new etched portrait of the poet from an original daguerreotype. Plates are in two states, with a biographical essay by John H. Ingram. An original subscriber's copy with his name printed under the limitation and with his bookplate and most likely a family member's bookplate. One important feature noted with this publication is the lengthy, "The Journal of Julius Rodman". Bound in publisher's pale blue-gray cloth, paper spine labels. A very nice clean set with spines very slightly but evenly faded or sunned.

Copies at the Folger, British Library, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, Cambridge, and the National Library of Scotland. Very rare. The Folger copy is in the Vault (C) and the notation is that it is restricted awaiting conservation and only available by special permission. A copy in the box appeared at the Anderson Gallery Auction in 1900. Books are bound in green cloth lettered and decorated in a black floral design with gilt lettering, reproduced on spines, each title with its own title pages, housed within a green cloth covered clamshell resembling a book, gilt lettering to upper board, spine lettered and decorated in a matching floral design with gilt lettering, publisher's full page label listing the contents mounted to the verso of the upper board. A very nice set with wear and old repair to the box.

London; Nd( but 1823): W. Simkin and R. Marshall. First Edition. Small Octavo. In three volumes: Each volume has a different vignette title page. Vol. I: 332, Vol. II: 316 and Vol. III: 349pp. A very scarce set on the German ghost, fairy tales and ghost stories influenced many of England's gothic writers. The Bottle Imp story was clearly used by Robert Lewis Stevenson. Among its unnamed translators are Thomas De Quincy, Robert Browning, and several others. Copies are found only in the British Museum, the Bodleian, the Boston Public, and the Library of Congress. The date had been excised(?) but is 1823. Bound in 3/4 green polished calf over marbled paper covered boards, raised bands, double brown morocco spine labels gilt, other compartments gilt decorated, all edges marbled with matching endpapers, marbled boards rubbed, spine rubbed or nicked, with a few chips to heads. A very good set.

This comprises all three volumes, each in the original monthly parts fully illustrated throughout.. Volume I: 536 pages (Sept. 1834-August 1835). Voluime II: 520 pages (Sept. 1835--Aug. 1836) and Volume III, 486 pages (Oct. 1836-Sept. 1837). The publisher in 1836 gave Nathaniel Hawthorne his first job as an editor (though he was unnamed in the volumes and also unpaid).
