TALES OF UNREST by Joseph Conrad - First Edition - 1898 - from Quill & Brush and

by Conrad, Joseph

Condition: See description

London: Fisher Unwin, 1898. First edition. His first short-story collection. In first-issue binding of dark-green cloth with page top edges gilt and other edges untrimmed (versus plain top edge and other edges rough-trimmed). This copy with the attractive, armorial blind-stamp of "Boot's Book-lover's Library" to bottom front corner of the cover. "Boot's" was a popular members-only lending library of the day. "The extremely simple system of exchange, the absence of irritating rules, and the perfect service given to Members, make this the best Circulating Library in the Kingdom," or so proclaimed their 1903 catalog, humbly entitled, MODERN ENGLISH LITERATURE: A SELECTION OF THE BEST KNOWN WORKS CIRCULATED, WITH WHICH IS EMBODIED A GUIDE TO POPULAR WORKS OF FICTION. Small tears and general shelfwear to spine ends, and bottom front corner with blind-stamp appears to have been used as a coaster at some point. Still, good to about very good.

Of the five stories in this volume, The Lagoon, the last in order, is the earliest in date. It is the first short story I ever wrote and marks, in a manner of speaking, the end of my first phase, the Malayan phase with its special subject and its verbal suggestions. Conceived in the same mood which produced Almayer's Folly and An Outcast of the Islands, it is told in the same breath (with what was left of it, that is, after the end of An Outcast), seen with the same vision, rendered in the same method - if such a thing as method did exist then in my conscious relation to this new adventure of writing for print.
