Tamerlane [prospectus for facsimile]

by (Poe, Edgar Allan); Schwartz, Jacob

Condition: See description

London: Frank Hollings Bookshop, 1931. Prospectus, which reproduces the original wrappers in facsimile (17 cm.). Accompanied by staple-bound pamphlet (6 pp.), inserted loose, presumably as issued. With gift inscription to front cover, from Quebec biblophile Roland Houde. In response to the virtual impossibility of acquiring a copy of the original Tamerlane, The Frank Hollings Bookshop of London issued this prospectus for an exact facsimile of Poe's original text, in a run of 295 copiesfor which "a $15,000 camera has been employed to make the duplicate plates from the original booklet... The negative plates of the original will be smashed up immediately after the printing." The prospectus also announces the availability of a six-paged pamphlet (present here), from J. Schwartz of London's Ulysses Bookshop, which includes a biography of the young Charlottesville Poe, as well as a concise publishing history and collation for Tamerlane: "This little book is more like some extraordinary child musician's improvisations than anything else: shell-like murmurings, indefinite, unreal, almost spectral shadows of song here run up and down the keys with their flitting golden tones, now crushing all the wayward sweetness out of a trampled chord, now up and away through the ascending diapason of some chance-struck air, melting into the 'choir invisible.'"
