About This Item
New York; (1901): Funk & Wagnalls. First Edition. Octavo. First printing. 588. Illustrated by T. De Thulstrup. With an introduction by Gen Lew Wallace. When Lionel Trilling read this work, he found it fascinating since at the end the author had made a survey of Jewish rabbis and scholars on the question: "What do you think of Christ?" Max Nordau, Isidore Singer Morris Jastrow and others. Among the other respondents quoted were William McKinley and William Gladstone. Finally, there is a long article on the coming of Christ from the Protestant point of view by A.T. Pierson (a major voice of evangelicals at the end of the 19th Century). A beautiful book bound in a red pictorial gilt clothdesigned by George Wharton Edwards [note the GRE on the front cover], accented in green. Very nice.
