Dust jacket has tears and chips at flap folds, with small chip also lower front hinge; tears and edge wear at spine; tanning; some foxing to rear panel; not price clipped ($2.00); now in new removable protective cover. Dark blue pictorial dust jacket of Tarzan with weapon in hand on front cover, Lion on spine, and other jungle animals on back with editorial and picture of Burroughs. Orange cloth covered boards with black print on front and spine. Spine is bumped and there's a bit of fraying at the corners. Binding and hinges are strong and solid; pages are clean and unmarked, with a bit of foxing on top edge. Pages are off white. Tipped-in frontispiece with illustration by A. W. Sperry. Also includes promotional bookmark, listing all prior Tarzan novels available in 75 cent Grosset and Dunlap reprint editions. Metropolitan hard cover with dust jacket, 1st edition, 1st printing Sept. 1929, 313 pages, cover art by A. W. Sperry. 8vo (7.5"" x 5"") First Tarzan title not published by A. C. McClurg. 12th in Tarzan series, preceded by Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle and followed by Tarzan at the Earth's Core. First published as a five-part serial in Blue Book magazine, starting in October 1928. Later reprinted by Grosset and Dunlap in 1931, and by Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1948.
