Boston: A. O. Crane, 1884. First Edition. Very good in its original dark brown cloth covered beveled boards with gilt text on the spine and black text with an illustration on the front board. An octavo of 9 by 7 1/2 inches with the cloth at the head and heel of the spine worn, rubbed and beginning to fray and a 4 inch tear to the cloth on the rear edge of the spine at its fold to the rear gutter. There is an early prior owner's name and date of "May 29, 1885" on the first free end page. This appears to be a limited edition for on the copyright page is a fancy handwritten note beginning "Vol. A" or "N" followed by ornate flourish all written in red ink. 375 pages including several indexes and text. Illustrated with a frontispiece from an engraving and numerous plates of personages of the period, facsimiles of signatures and other items. Printed from original manuscripts written during the pre-Revolutionary period. (Gephart, 4139)
