"Hundreds of letters, mainly between Hayes and Atticus Haygood of Georgia, regarding one of the most important educational efforts during the 19th century." -Jenkins. The Slater Fund was established after the end of the Civil War to provide monies to the recently emancipated Black populations of the Southern States. The present two volumes presents over 1,200 typewritten pages of correspondence from the desk of Rutherford B. Hayes, American president and one of the fund's trustees. Southern vocational schools benefited greatly from the fund, especially Virginia's Hampton Institute, Alabama's Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, Atlanta's Spelman Seminary, South Carolina's Claflin University, and Tennessee's Fisk University.
