Elliot Stock, 1876. Leather bound hardback. The book is bound in rubbed full calf with marbled endpapers and gilt page edges, the front hinge is broken internally, the text is well bound together. The pastedown has an owner's bookplate. There is some edge foxing through out with the first and last few pages more extensively affected.

Boards and spine a little darkened, front board has a small hole in the cloth near the lower corner, ink name on flyleaf. Tissue guraded frontis. Limited to 350 numbered copies, this copy out of series, not numbered. Printed at the Chiswick Press. A clean and tight copy, printed on nice paper.

Edited with introductory note by Meynell. Herbert wrote poetry in English, Latin and Greek. In 1633 all of Herbert's English poems were published in The Temple: Sacred Poems and Private Ejaculations, with a preface by Nicholas Ferrar. The book went through eight editions by 1690. Limited to 350 copies. In a cloth binding. Externally, sound, though with some marks and darkening to the spine. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places. Ink inscription to front free-endpaper. Pages are bright and clean, with just some foxing to the first and last few pages. Good

Panelled black morocco, with floral blind stamped border. Five raised bands. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers, inside gilt dentelles. Matching gilt blocked decorations of acorns and oak leaves to spine compartments and covers. Facsimile of the 1633 University of Cambridge first edition. xvi, 192, [3], index. Some tanning to pages at margins - seems to be a recurring issue with some Stock editions - joints rubbed, slight crack to front inner hinge. No ownership marks or annotations. No limitation, but a scarce Elliot Stock facsimile edition with no other copies listed online as of May, '23.

Cover in fair condition but detaching on front about 1/3, damage at top and bottom of spline. Some signatures of early owners. Title page and photo are strikingly sharp.
