About This Item

London: The Crime Club by Collins, 1939. First edition of the best-selling mystery novel of all-time and Christie's personal favorite of all of her novels, released subsequently in the United States as And Then There Were None and so titled in all successive reprints. Octavo, original cloth. Near fine in a the rare original dust jacket with a few small chips. Scarce and desirable in this condition without any of the usual restoration. The world's best-selling mystery and one of the best-selling books of all time, Christie's Ten Little Niggers was first published in the United Kingdom by the Collins Crime Club on November 6, 1939 and was subsequently released in the United States in January 1940 with the title And Then There Were None, which would serve as the works title in all subsequent printings. The book has sold over 100 million copies and has had more adaptations than any other Christie title, including the 1943 play adapted and produced by Christie herself and the 1945 film adaptation directed by Rene Clair.

Synopsis

Ten Little Niggers , later re-titled And Then There Were None , and also titled Ten Little Indians , is considered author Agatha Christie’s best and most ambitious work. The mystery novel has been adapted for both theatre and cinema and has remained highly influential in the mystery genre. The novel is centered around a large murder mystery based on an infamous blackface minstrel song that describes a group of people who die under strange circumstances one by one. Due to the racist original title (1939), the book was re-titled And Then There Were None in 1940, and it was also published as (also overtly racist) Ten Little Indians in 1964. The book’s original title is not the only reason it is a highly controversial piece of writing. Racism and orientalism are found throughout the novel, and some non-US publications still use versions of the original title. And Then There Were None has sold over 100 million copies worldwide.
