London: Grey Walls Press, 1953. First UK Revised Edition. Edward Pagram. Octavo. (19 cm.) 418 pp. Full dark gold cloth. Titles in gilt on spine. Pictorial dust jacket grey-toned illustration of gentleman smoking a cigarette against a nightlife in the city backdrop. Mild offset toning to front free endpapers and some very minor rubbing to jacket edges. All in all, an excellent copy with few flaws. Fine. He considered it his masterpiece. At the time of the initial publication of "Tender Is The Night" in 1934, reviewers had mixed opinions about what would be F. Scott Fitzgerald's final novel. But, Fitzgerald, the literary hero of the Jazz Age, was again, ahead of his time. Many now consider "Tender Is The Night" to perhaps be even greater than "The Great Gatsby". Because of sluggish sales and mixed reviews, Fitzgerald revised his last novel several times. This, particular edition of 1953 contains Fitzgerald's final revisions, entrusting writer and editor, Malcolm Cowley, with his ultimate notes and instructions. This posthumous edition has the narrative rearranged into chronological order with a preface by Cowley, an appendix regarding the manuscript and an additional 10 pages of revealing notes and facts about the text and the true inspirations behind the characters in the book. And, although the novel very deeply involves wealthy, American expatriots, it was English, working class, artist Edward Pagram who provided the charcoal illustration for the dust jacket. A very interesting and important edition for the F. Scott Fitzgerald collector.

Description:
Printed for F. Style. London.,1739. FIRST, AND ONLY, EDITION. 8vo. Front wrapper, ii,28pp. Lacking the half title but with the rare printed front wrapper (showing the price of Six Pence) laid down and bound in. Text complete. Top edge of pages have been cut and gilded, the others are untrimmed. Pages a bit marked and rubbed but overall a very good example. The original front wrapper has some small areas of loss to the edges and corners and has been professionally laid down. Bound in modern half red crushed morocco by C. Walters. Spine with raised bands, ruled in blind. Compartments lettered in gilt. Boards with dark red cloth. Burgundy endpapers. Previous owners bookplate (Douglas Peter Crossman, Earl Stonham) on front pastedown endpaper. Overall a very good copy of this uncommon political satire, mocking the supporters of George II and Prince James Stuart, the Old pretender. Not in Halkett & Laing.:

New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence.
