First edition, first printing. Fine red cloth book with minor bumping to spine ends and tiny dent to top edge. Near Fine unclipped, bright jacket with minor crinkling to spine ends and the upper portion of rear panel, spine just a touch toned. A very nice copy of a book that's not as rare to find signed as folks would have you think, but truly rare with a solid provenance like this.
Inscribed and dated in the month of publication(July, 1952) on the front free end paper for his high school English teacher, poet Florence Ripley Mastin, whose classes he described as unusually exciting. An important provenance involving a person uniquely influential in the author's writing development. And as you know, this book was the basis for the 1984 movie of the same name starring Robert Redford, Glenn Close, Robert Duvall, and Kim Basinger.

This is the only copy of its kind in the entire world: an Easton Press leather-bound edition of To Kill a Mockingbird that was signed after publication by Harper Lee, and has been professionally authenticated by PSA/DNA. Condition of this book is as-new with the exception of a barely visible scratch in the gilt on the lower page block. Please understand that Easton Press did NOT publish a "signed edition" of Ms. Lee's book; the only way to obtain a signed copy was to have Ms. Lee sign after publication. So - at the time of this listing - this is both the ONLY signed leather-bound edition available anywhere in the world, AND, crucially, also the ONLY Mockingbird of any kind with an authenticated signature: an ironclad guarantee from PSA COA that includes their official Letter of Authenticity. In a Near Fine unclipped dust jacket with light wear at the spine ends, and a short closed tear along the top edge of the front panel with some faint associated creasing. A lovely copy, signed by the illustrator. In the early '20s, Blaine met a young John Steinbeck on the Panama Canal, and the two quickly became friends. Zurich: Rascher & Cie.. 1919. The first German edition of Joyce's play Exiles and the first of his works to be published in translation in any language. One of 600 copies printed: Joyce was living in Zurich at the time and he paid for the publication of this book out of his own pocket. This copy is inscribed by the author: "To J.R. [sic] Watson, Jun / with grateful regards / James Joyce / 8. ix. 1919." J.S. Watson, Jr. was at the time the co-owner of the modernist literary journal The Dial, which he bought from Martyn Johnson with his friend and fellow Harvard graduate, Scofield Thayer. Watson became president of the magazine and Thayer became its editor. The "grateful regards" refers to a gift of $300 that Watson had sent Joyce earlier in the year at the urging of Thayer, who had himself sent Joyce $700. These sums bailed Joyce out of dire financial straits, allowed him to settle a court case against him, and helped him support the theater group that he had associated with in Zurich, the English… Read More
