About This Item

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1929. First edition. Cloth. Near Fine. 11" by 9". None. The first edition of this famed philosophical poem by Robert Bridges. This is the large paper copy, which is a limited edition. Number 237 of 250 copies published of this work, which have been printed in Great Britain by John Johnson at the University Press, Oxford. With the loosely inserted publisher's note on the text. Understandably, lacking the original dustwrapper. Bridges was a doctor by training and achieved literary fame much later into his life and career. He was poet laureate from 1913 to 1930. This quarto edition of the poem is uncommon to find, as there was an octavo edition issued in the same year. 'The Testament of Beauty' comprises of four books, and is regarded as Bridges' most famous work. It earned him a great reputation in the literary field and he was appointed to the Order of Merit for this title. This work conveys Bridges' use of 'neo-miltonic syllabics' where the poem is based on syllables rather than accents. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart with just some light fading to the extremities and to the spine. Minor shelfwear to the head and tail of spine and to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and very clean. Near Fine
