Londini: N Guliel, 1593 A good copy of the 3rd edition of what was considered to be a ground-breaking protestant version of the Bible. Immanuel Tremellius, a convert from Judaism to Christianity and then to Calvinism, worked with his son-in-law Franciscus Junius, on the translation. The New Testament is laid out in 2 columns, the first with Tremellius' interpretation and the second with Theodore Beza's. Beza did not believe that Jerome was the translator of the Vulgate and instead used Erasmus' writings - so this version allows a comparison between the two. It was first published in 1579 and by 1764 had gone through 33 different printings. This copy is in a full leather binding probably dating from the late 1700's/early 1800's but retaining some leather from an earlier binding. It is complete but the boards are attached to the spine by the sewing and the leather has split. The spine, with title label and raised bands is scuffed, particularly at the top and the boards have a lot of scuffing and wear. The contents are complete and in very good condition. The endpapers are marbledc and there is a small ink inscription from 1814 on the second iniitial blank, and a further signature from 1832 on the 3rd initial blank. Contents: decorative title page 1593; dedication 1p; preface 4pp; lectori 1p; Text 'Primus Liber' pp 1-177 (stain in bottom corner p 129); blank; title page Pars Secunda; preface 4pp; text pp1-104 (with numbering only on facing pages); blank; title page Pars Tertia; preface 4pp; text pp 1-75 (numbering on facing pages only)(stain 1cm x 3 cm extending from gutter pp 15-17 affecting a small piece of text; p 24 has a historic page repair in silk thread); title page Pars Quarti; preface 2pp; text pp 5-130 (no text missing - page numbering on both sides of paper); blank; title page Libri Apocryphi Sive Appendix testamenti Veteris ad Canonem 1592; preface 4pp; text p 4-74 (pages numbered on face only); title page D N Jesu Christi Testamentum Novum Sive Foedus Novum, Franciscus Junius 1592; dedication 2pp; note re translation 1p; contents and note 1p; text in dual columns pp 1-187 (page numbers on face only)(repaired page tear bottom margin p177); Prolegomena 2pp; Apocalypsis pp 189-198; final blank. Contents very clean - some occasional staining to top page margin. A very nice copy.
