Edmund's uncle was Benjamin Harrison V, who was one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. He was also a U.S. Senator from Virginia in 1804-1815, and when he had "The Wigwam" built in 1790 he was in the U.S. House of Representatives. Upon Giles' death in 1830, the house went to his son, who sold it to William Henry Harrison (signer of this book) in 1832. William Henry Harrison and his wife Lucy began a school at "The Wigwam" known as Amelia Academy, and it served as a prep school for its students to enter the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. The home was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. William Henry and Lucy Harrison raised several sons at "The Wigwam.
