With 31 map in text, including sectional state map; pictorial map on front and rear end-papers. American Guide Series: Stated Second Printing, 1943. Separate essays include "Racial Elements" and "Folklore and Folkways," and goes to some extent into the activities of such outlaws as Sam Bass, King Fisher, Ben Thompson, and John Wesley Hardin. The illustrations include reproductions of two murals by Tom Lea and one by Peter Hurd; also numerous photos by Lee, Rothstein, and Lange of the Farm Security Administration. Line drawings used as chapter head-pieces and tail-pieces. The preface acknowledges the consultants to the various essay, including J. Frank Dobie who assisted with the essays on Literature and Folklore. The historical incidents so dear to Texans, along with anecdotes of the frontier and tales of celebrated personages, are larded throughtout the book, giving it a flavor of authenticity. Slight separation between p. 718 and free end paper; does not effect the binding in any way. Light wear to top and bottom edge spine with some additional minor edge wear and foxing to top text block edge, else, Pristine, no wear. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Smooth turquoise cloth with dark brown lettering to front board and spine.
