About This Item
According to Chapter Six, "The American Textbook Publishers Institute is the professional and trade organization for publishers of books used in institutions of learning in the United States of America. It was established on July 1, 1942 by 28 interested publishers. Its 1949 membership includes 57 companies whose business represents about 85 per cent of the total volume of the textbook business of the nation."
Chapter subheadings include "An attempt to say why textbook publishers look on their work as a mission, and to state their code"; "A picture of our industry as a thread in the closely-woven fabric of the nation's history"; "How big our industry is, how much it costs to operate it, and how much profit it makes"; "A selection of editorial and manufacturing activities..."; and "How some publishers associated themselves in the public interest and in their own interest, too." An uncommon, unusual, rather cheeky piece of advertising-as-trade-history?
