Stevens." Stephens (1810-1886) was born in Connecticut, but began her literary career in Portland, Maine with her husband Edward (they co-founded and edited a monthly literary periodical), and eventually became one of the best-known writers on the New York City scene after moving there in 1837. She made a comfortable living writing serial and "dime" novels, and compiled "A Pictorial History of the War for the Union" during the Civil War.
