London: Thomas Cotes, 1640. FIRST EDITION. Complete with the engraved frontispiece signed by W. Marshall mounted on blank leaf with a small portion of the bottom corners missing. Numerous woodcut illustrations, initials, chapter headpieces, tailpieces. An actual leaf from a small "madder" pressed in between pp. 276 and 277. "Errata" with cropped margins pasted and mounted on last leaf. Occasional annotations. Contemporary calf, red morocco spine label, red fore-edge; interior excellent. From the library of Charles Carmichael Lacaita (1853-1933) and his wife Mary Doyle (c. 1853-1924) with their bookplate. Charles was a British politician based in Sussex and served as a Member of Parliament for Dundee. He was also an avid botanist and eventually had nineteen plant species named after him.

Fine illustrated and antiquarian Botany . 1st. Ed. Pub. London. 1640. pp.xx, 1755, [i] with 2714 fine woodcut illus. With printed title and engraved allegorical title by Marshall incorporating a portrait of the author. Folio. Hardback. Printed title, engraved title and last leaf of index laid down. Woodcut portrait of John Parkinson to verso of engraved title. Errata leaf in facsimile on period paper. Only minor indications of age including four minor paper flaws, upper corner of p.537/8 removed (only partial loss of pagination number), five neat repairs, o/w. contents exceptional and very pleasing indeed. Later full-calf binding neatly refurbished and rebacked retaining original spine (gilt lettered morocco label) in nr. fine condition. A super copy. A magnificent work and arguably the most detailed herbal in the English language.
