Baltimore: Waverley Press, 1953. 1st Edition. FIRST ENGLISH EDITIONS IN ORIGINAL PAPER WRAPS of four papers on mathematics and game theory published by Emile Borel between 1921 and 1927, papers in which Borel became "the first to define games of strategy" (Science World Website).

In these papers, "Borel gave the first modern formulation of a mixed strategy along with finding the minimax solution for two-person games with three or five possible strategies. Initially he maintained that games with more possible strategies would not have minimax solutions, but by 1927, he considered this an open question as he had been unable to find a counterexample" (Walker, An Outline of the History of Game Theory).

WITH: John Nash's fourth and final paper seminal contribution to non-cooperative game theory wherein he set an entirely new research agenda commonly referred to as the Nash Program for cooperative games. CONDITION & DETAILS: 4to. 10 X 7 inches (250 x 175mm). Single issue in original wraps in fine condition.

Description:
1st Edition. FIRST EDITIONS IN MINT CONDITION AND IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of Abraham Wald's seminal work on sequential tests of statistical hypotheses. Before Wald, the traditional style of statistical decision was to posit a hypothesis, make a predetermined number of measurements, then make a decision whether to accept or reject the hypothesis. Wald realized that this procedure is quite wasteful, and that many measurements could be saved if given the option to decide at every step whether to continue or stop the measurement process. "According to Wald, the resulting ‘sequential probability ratio test frequently results in a savings of about 50 percent in the number of observations over the most efficient test procedure based on a fixed number of observations" (Gass, An Annotated Timeline of Operations Research, 65). In these papers Wald, known now as "the father of sequential analysis and decision theory," first presents the theoretical foundations of the theory of sequential analysis. The ideas he put… Read More

Description:
1699 CHINA Memoirs of Le Comte Chinese Rites Confucius Mandarin Mathematics
The history of China has always been one of the most popular discussions of western culture and was a regular occurring topic of authors from the 16th- 18th-centuries. One of the most important examples of Chinese history was written by Louis Le Comte, a French Jesuit who wrote this work on his mission to China in 1688. This work, 'Memoirs and Observations', created a huge debate within the Chinese Rites Controversy.
This work covers various Chinese empires and kingdoms including the K'ang His and Kangxi, Chinese astrology and star gazing, Zodiac and mythology, Chinese boats, Mandarin costumes, mechanical inventions, and establishment of Christianity in China.
While these contents are important, the most desirable aspect of this book is the section devoted to Confucius and his teaching. A highly desirable work with fascinating contents that includes full-page and folding engravings!

Discounted for final fair hours!San Jose, CA: Billiken Press, 1971. First Edition. Paperback. Very good. Softcover 4to, 44pp. No date, but an article about the book appears in the Dec 3, 1971 San Jose State "Spartan Daily" newspaper. Adhesive remainder to the upper left cover, mild rubbing and edgewear. Previous owner's signature on the title page, else unmarked. Great '70s graphic design and illustrations. Developed while Goldberg was a grad student at SJS to make sturdy geometrical models that "combine techniques from the mathematics and art classroom." Patterns are included to make a equilateral tetrahedron, equilateral hexahedron, isosceles hexahedron, cube, octahedron, decahedron, icosahedron, twenty-four triangular hedron, and concave hedron. Goldberg published a more popular variation of the book in 1977, without Sellars (misspelled "Sellers" on the title page). The newer "Pholdit" featured simpler shapes and was marketed toward a more general audience for "family fun." Scarce.
