This work went through many editions very quickly, this being the fifth edition.The author moved to Japan in 1873, when he was employed by the Japanese government as an o-yatoi gaikokujin.Illustrated with one folding map.Written by Basil Hall Chamberlain, one of the foremost British Japanologists during the last nineteenth century, a Professor of Japanese at the Tokyo Imperial University.Stamp of F. V. Izard to the head of the title page and preface.One page of publisher's adverts to the rear. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Light marks to the boards, with a heavier mark to the rear board. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some spots. Small closed tear to the folding map. Very Good

Based in the literary city of Bath, our offices are housed in the Eastern Dispensary. Built in 1845, the building originally existed as a charitable institution providing medical care. The building now houses our collection of over twenty thousand books and has five full time members of staff.
