About This Item

Apud Phil. Godofredum Saurmann, Bremae: ., 1722 pp. 76, 630, [56] + Engraved frontis. Title page printed in red and black. 16 mo. 170 mm. Early vellum backed paste paper boards binding. Latin text with some Hebrew. Early autograph ownership of Jno. Bliss Hibbins. Hardbound. Very Good. The title translates roughly as: Moses and Aaron, civil and ecclesiastical rites, used by the ancient Hebrews observed, and at large opened, for the clearing of many obscure texts thoughout the whole scripture, which texts are now added to the end of the book : wherein likewise is shewed what customs the Hebrews borrowed from heathen people, and that many heathenish customs, originally, have been unwarrantable imitations of the Hebrews. Thomas Godwyn (ca. 1587-1642) was an English scholar who became the first fellow of the newly founded Pembroke College, Oxford (1624), became chaplain to the Bishop of Bath and Wells, and rector of Brightwell, Berkshire (1626-1643). The translator into Latin, Johan Heinrich Reitz (1655-1720) was born near Bacharach on the Rhine. In Bremen, he came into contact with the ideas of the Pietist Movement in the German Church. In 1681, he received his first appointment as Pfarrer or pastor in the Reformed Church of the Palatinate in Freinsheim. At this time he came under the personal influence of the Pietist Philip Jakob Spener. It was in Freinsheim that he produced this which established his name in the academic world. W154. Hardcover. Very Good.
