Woodmere mounted this exhibition to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the untimely death of Hovenden, a local but masterful artist who was inexplicably eclipsed by Eakins and Anshutz. Includes three essays: "Thomas Hovenden: Images of Heritage and Hope" with 39 notes by Ann Gregory Terhune, "A Pennsylvania Artist: Thomas Hovenden and the Philadelphia Art World" with 104 notes by Sylvia Yount, and "Home, Hearth, and Humanity: The Triumph Over Racial Stereotyping of African-Americans in the Genre Paintings of Thomas Hovenden and Henry Ossawa Tanner" with 27 notes by Naurice Frank Woods, Jr. Also contains a 4-page chronology and a catalogue of the exhibition of 35 paintings, 5 etchings, and 40 drawings. Published to accompany an exhibition held in Philadelphia, PA: Woodmere Art Museum, Sept. 10 to Dec. 3, 1995.
