About This Item
[Oakland]: United People for Dignity and Change, [198-]. Handbill. Three 8.5x11 inch sheets, all very good. "We won't let crime be normal," "This cycle of pain must end," and a pledge scroll, not filled out. Two of the leaflets have contact information for Dennis, last name not mentioned, but known to your humble cataloger. Dennis Terry was a member of the National Organization for an American Revolution, James and Grace Lee Boggs' group; this was a local anti-crime project he undertook that reflected NOAR's mixture of social critique and moral appeal. "In the past few years, crime and violence have become a normal part of life in Oakland and other bay area cities. Our elderly have become victims of ruthless assaults, abuses, and muggings. Women are the targets of rapists. Our young children have been corrupted and made into drug pushers and lookouts for dealers as they make their scores..." Asks the reader to sign a pledge, which is on the blue sheet included here, to refrain from physical violence, not to steal or buy stolen goods, and not to stand idly by when someone is being hurt.
