John Clark "Jack" Okey (June 3, 1889 - January 8, 1963) Was An American Art Director. He Was Raised In Los Angeles And Attended The Harvard School For Boys. After Leaving, He Was Given Instruction In Art By His Uncle, The California Artist, J. Bond Francisco. While He Was In His Early 20S, He Traveled To Paris With His Friend Stanton Macdonald Wright, And Spent Several Years There Studying Art. Around The Time Of His Marriage In 1913, He Became Involved In The Nascent Film Industry In The Los Angeles Area And Was Involved In The Design And Construction Of Some Of The Earliest Studios There. He Continued In The Film Industry As An Art Director Until His Retirement In 1959. In The Mid-1930S He Spent Several Years In England Working For Alexander Korda, Designing Studios For Him. 1945. Near Fine. 1 typed letter, signed by President Herbert Hoover, on his personal stationery. Thanking Mrs. Joseph W. Jones of Bristol, Tennessee, who had sent a $10 donation to the Boys' Clubs of America in response to Hoover's appeal in the organization's behalf. Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) served as the 31st president of the United States from 1929 to 1933. After leaving the presidency, he and his wife had lived at Palo Alto, California. Following her death in 1944 he relocated to New York City; the address on this letter is 420 Lexington Ave., NYC. In Near Fine Condition: two horizontal folds; light additional creasing; clean and solid.

1808. Very Good. 1 handwritten letter from the Duke of Montrose, dated 3 May 1808, London, responding to a request from Lt. Col. Simpson for scheduling the Eastern Battalion of Stirlingshire Volunteer Infantry for two weeks at Stirling. James Graham, 3rd Duke of Montrose (1755-1836), was a member of Parliament in 1780 and from 1784 to 1790 and is said to be responsible for the repeal of the act prohibiting the wearing of tartans in 1782. He was Master of the Horse from 1790 to 1795, and from 1807 to 1821, during which period this letter was written. In Very Good Condition: creasing; darkened along upper edge; light ink from another letter placed on top while damp.

Each letter is two pages - February 24, 1946 -Dear Gus; and November 19, in which he mentions a forthcoming book of his art with the text being written by John Collier, commissioner of Indian Affairs (later published as Patterns And Ceremonials Of The Indians Of The Southwest). Stafford writing to Louis McKee, the publisher of the literary magazine "The Axe Factory Review" apologizing profusely for his unintended duplicate submission. "I found to my horror that... "Listening to the Tide"... is alas at two places now... (and) the only thing to do was write this note in great haste, to minimize the damage..." Stafford goes on to explain his manuscript management, and how he could have made his mistake. Ends with "Humbly and guilty." Signed "Bill Stafford" in ink. Aprx two hundred and forty words. 1792. Very Good. Handwritten letter, dated Jan. 28, 1792, to James McCubbin Lingan, Collector at Georgetown, Md., acknowledging the receipt of a paid draft of the Treasurer for $400. Signed by Tench Coxe (1755-1824), who had been appointed Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in 1789 when Alexander Hamilton was Secretary of the Treasury. Coxe served in the Continental Congnress and was the author of numerous political pieces. James McCubbin Lingan (1751-1812) served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution and was appointed Collector of the Port of Georgetown by George Washington after the war. He was murdered by a mob while defending the freedom of the press during the War of 1812. In Very Good Condition: several old folds; starting to separate along one fold; otherwise, clean and solid.
