About This Item

Portland, OR: Author, 2012. Original work. 4 x 5.25 inches. Unique artist's book, titled, signed, and dated on the spine. Fine condition.

Artist Gabriel Liston, whose paintings typically depict an unsentimental view of the world of children's experience, creates these one-of-a-kind "book tiles" by sewing shut copies of cheaply made commercial children's books (all from the same series), sealing them with acrylic medium, and painting images in a blue reminiscent of Delft tiles. Liston maintains the book tiles' tenuous connection with their origin by typically taking the title from a caption in the book, and by sanding away tiny areas to allow the original cover coloration to show through.
