About This Item
New York: Grove Press, May 2002. Hardcover. First Edition (stated) / full number line. As New book in an As New jacket. Pristine inside and out. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. xviii + 364 pages.
In 1949, at the height of U.S. concern about the Soviet Union's atomic experiments and the spread of communism in China, the CIA sent two officers on an mission into Tibet intended in part to keep the kingdom's uranium deposits from falling into Russian hands as well as to deliver arms to the Tibetan resistance. Douglas Mackiernan was killed during the mission, the first CIA officer to die in the line of duty. Frank Bessac, with several other cohorts, trekked through Tibet on foot, gathering atomic intelligence and establishing regional contacts. The mission was a failure on all counts and Laird argues that it may have precipitated China's 1950 invasion of Tibet which China claimed was playing into the hands of enemy imperial powers.
