Paris.. Ca. 1801- 1819.. Stipple engraving printed in color with added hand color, plate 12 x 9 inches on sheet 16 x 10 inches. A couple of very light foxing spots, scarcely visible, mark in lower margin (outside plate area). Very good condition. An exquisite botanical print of the branch with flowers and botanical details, highlighting the artistry of Pierre Joseph Redoute in combination with the subtle technique of stipple engraving. The celebrated botanical artist Redoute (1759-1840) had the distinction of receiving the patronage of Marie Antoinette before the French Revolution as well as that of the Empress Josephine following the Reign of Terror. This fine example of botanical art was published in "Traite des Arbres et Arbustes que l'on cultive en france en pleine terre. Seconde edition 'nouveau Duhamel' considerablement augmentee" (Dunthorne 243) which documented trees and shrubs cultivated in France. This is plate 52 from Volume 4. .
