Hardcover binding in almost new condition. The unclipped dustjacket has a few tiny tears and creases; protected in archival mylar. Inscribed and signed by Robert William Fogel to Theodore W. Schultz (1902-1998). Schultz was the winner of the 1979 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences jointly with W. A. Lewis. Fogel was awarded the 1993 Nobel Prize in Economics jointly with Douglass C. North. The inscription reads "To T. W. Schultz With deep appreciation for your many helpful comments and criticisms on the book and for all you have done to make the Economic History Workshop the exciting intellectual forum that it has been during the past several years. Affectionately, Bob. Chicago August 8, 1974." The text is clean and unmarked. First edition. Vol. II: xii, 267 pages of text. Hardcover binding with minimal shelfwear and several spots of discoloration to the bottom edge of the boards. The unclipped dustjacket has numerous small tears and creases, has moderate sunning, and is overall shelfworn; protected in archival mylar. Contains the autograph of Fogel, signed in blue ink on a piece of paper a little smaller than the size of a business card, which has been laid-in on the front endpaper. The autograph reads "R.W. Fogel" under which he has written "Jan. 1978." Two tiny spots of discoloration on a front endpaper, and the previous owner's name (a Fogel family member) on the front endpaper. The text is otherwise clean and unmarked. First edition..

An interesting and challenging look at the economics of slavery, Time on the Cross challenges most of the 'common knowledge' about slavery in the US. It breaks down the dry data in a way that makes it interesting and accessible to the layman.
