Dr. Stockham was one of America's first female doctors and specialized in obstetrics and gynecology. Her crusading interest in women's health and equality led to the publication of the first edition of the present volume in 1883. Among other recommendations, the book advocates a high-fiber diet, temperance, homeopathic treatments, exercise, birth control, and sexual continence during pregnancy (helpfully aided by avoiding coffee, eggs, oysters, animal food and nighttime meals). The author was a proponent of the rational dress movement, exhorting women to rid themselves of tightly-laced corsets and heavy layers of garments and allow their viscera to achieve more natural confinement, even if she did so with a tinge of eugenics: "If this murderous practice continues another generation, it will bury all the middle and upper classes of women and children, and leave propagation to the coarse-grained but healthy lower classes."
