About This Item
The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling, is a comic novel, considered to be one of the finest novels in the English language. Written in 1749 by the English writer Henry Fielding (1707-1754), it is constructed around a romance plot.
Squire Allworthy suspects that the infant he adopts is the illegitimate child of his servant. As Tom grows up, he falls in love with the unattainable virtuous neighbor, Sophia. Numerous obstacles have to be overcome before he can win her hand. In the course of this, various sets of characters pursue each other from one part of the country to another, giving Fielding an opportunity to paint an incomparably vivid picture of England in the mid-18th century. It has been adapted many times, most notably for the Oscar-winning 1963 film starting Albert Finney and Susannah York.
This copy is undated but I believe it's from the International Collectors Library's 1979 printing. It is hunter green boards with an elaborate brilliant gold design on the cover and spine. It has a bound-in silk bookmark. Unadorned, 632 pages.
Inside, the book is perfect. It has not been read, or even opened. The spine is un-cracked, the covers have no shelfwear at all—it is in pristine condition.
