"This writer of too many books was confirmed in the Episcopal Church of the Holy Communion in New York City at the age of about thirteen. He was a very devout little boy and had made promises to his mother; the sips of communion wine which he took in that church were the only drops of alcoholic liquor that have passed his lips in eighty-five years. But the church did not hold him, because he saw, in all the world around him, cruel poverty in the midst of great riches, and he left the church to become an agitator of what he called "social justice." That went on for some seventy years; until, left alone, he wished to marry a lady who was a member of the Episcopal church. So it came about that he became acquainted with the rector of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in his home town of Monrovia, California...." - Foreword By Upton Sinclair from Tongue Speaking: An Experiment In Spiritual Experience
