About This Item

8vo (14,5 x 9 cm). [12], 225, [3] pp. Woodcut head- and tailpieces. Modern boards.

In fair condition. With bookplate of "[J.] Van der Hoeven" with motto "Recte Faciendo Neminem Timeas", name on first free endpaper ("Dr. J. van der Hoeven, 1909"), name on title-page ("Letellier"), the title-page soiled and repaired at the back, some wormholes, waterstains, last page soiled and with a contemporary annotation.

Extremely rare second edition of Hille's medical textbook, arranged in the form of questions and answers to instruct medical students.

First published in 1706, the treatise opens with a 30-page theoretical introduction, then follow 36 capitals devoted to a wide variety of fractures, wounds, diseases, etc. But perhaps the most interesting chapter is the final part, on syphilis and other venereal diseases, including chancres, paraphimosis ("Spaanse kraag"), and genital ulcers.

Hille (1633-1706) served as a naval surgeon aboard a ship commanded by Maarten Tromp before setting up practice in Antwerp. His Tooneel der chirurgie was "ein geschätztes Handbuch der Chirurgie" (Hirsch).

No auction records.

B.M.N. I, 292 (illustrated with a portrait, not present in this copy); STCV 12915320 (1 copy); cf. Hirsch III, p. 208.
