About This Item

184 pp. Assumed First Edition, copyright and preface both dated 1883. Many illustrations of instruments. Includes chapters on scales of maps, representation, reconnaisance, levelling, surveying, hydrography, underground topography, field sketching, instruments (stadia, transit, sextant, odometer, casella compass, protractor, chronometer), 9 folding maps & diagrams, & slip 'Data For Topographical Sketching' loosely inserted in an envelope on the rear flap. This has caused the rear hinge and spine cover to come loose and it is not clear how it was originally attached. The spine shows wear at both ends. Aside from these faults, this is a very good, bright, clean copy, dark brown decorated cover and printing showing a surveyor, gilt decorated spine, brown cloth covered boards, very little or no shelfwear (book may have generally been kept flat). Very scarce and rare.
