London: Longman, Rees, et al., 1832. First edition (xii, unpaginated), large quarto in original three-quarter leather over marbled paper, t.e.g. A few pages stained at H and I. Otherwise exceptionally clean and bright text throughout. For a description of the topography of La Chevrotiere or Chavigney seigniory or the course of the Metgermette river in the Beauce, for example, this gazetteer by the Surveyor-General of Lower Canada was the source to consult. A very good copy of an important early account of the places and the names of places in Quebec.

London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green, and Longman, 1832. Hardcover. Good. xii p. + unpaginated dictionary. 30 cm. Cloth hardcover with taped spine. Corners and edges worn, hinges cracking. Ink inscription on front free endpaper. Pages vii-xii detached. Occasional foxing and thumbing. Bouchette's dictionary describes Lower Canadian place names from Abagusquash to Yamaska, including rivers, counties, districts, canals, islands, lakes, villages, and more. Location is given, along with translations of Native words, statistics, population, industries, and history. Montreal itself is described, divided into parishes, but so are such off the beaten track locales as the Musk Rat River. Former owner of this book was Dr. Louis Laberge, director of the Montreal health bureau in the late 19th century. His "bureau" was entrusted with the tasks of maintaining sanitary conditions in the streets and in private and public buildings, inspecting food and disinfecting contaminated areas.
