New York: Harper & Row, 1988. First Edition . Hardcover. Fine/Fine. First Printing of First Edition. 174pp, 15 color & 7 b/w photos, end-page map. beige boards, navy cloth spine with silver lettering. SIGNED by JOE SIMPSON and SIGNED by SIMON YATES. Joe Simpson's signature in the book being offered here is an especially good example since it is a relatively early one (dated 1992) with all of the letters in SIMPSON being present and legible. By the mid-1990s his signature in books had changed to where his last name is only S and I with a squiggle underneath. This is the first printing of the USA edition. The book is in excellent condition with no previous owner marks or writing on any pages, no creased page corners, no soiling, no foxing, tight binding, clean throughout except for tiny 25mm x 15mm rectangular area at base of rear pastedown that is yellowed where old price sticker had been placed. The original dust jacket is in fine condition with no tears, no chips, no rubbing, no soiling, 100% complete. Simpson signed on the title page. Yates signed on the dedication page where the book is dedicated to him. This has been one of the most popular mountaineering true stories. It is the account of first ascent of West Face of Siulá Grande (6352m) in the Cordillera Huayhuash, Peru. Fine climb, dumb accident on descent, amazing survival , gigantic willpower & lots of luck. Simpson broke both ankles in a fall. Later Yates was forced to cut the rope and drop Simpson--probably to his death--in order to have any chance of pursuing the rescue. DOUBLE-SIGNED copies of the first edition are uncommon. PHOTOS ARE OF ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED.
