Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking. Boards have mild shelf wear with light rubbing and corner bumping. Some light marking and sunning. Book has noticeable forward lean. Unclipped jacket has light edge wear with minor tears and chipping. Moderate tanning and creasing, with rubbing and marking.

Londion: J. M. Dent, 1928. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. First Everyman edition and printing. In very good green cloth boards, blind stamped Everyman logo to front, gilt titles to spine. The boards are straight; quite clean and firm; corners sound; top rear edge a little warped. "The Clevedon Community Bookshop Co-operative Bindery Team" have made a added a few stitches to the spine. Unmarked orange and white Everyman end papers; Tiny navy sticker from bookseller Mombasa Times, Mombasa, Kenya. Tinted dark brown top cut edge; the fore and tail edges are lightly tanned. The text block is in very good condition, tight, flat and lightly foxed on Prelims, and on a few text pages. No dedications etc. Everyman list to rear. Without jacket.

[nice-looking set, with minimal wear to books, birthday gift inscription on verso of front endpaper in Volume One; the jackets are both lightly soiled, with a couple of tiny edge-tears and a touch of age-toning to the spines]. (Everyman's Library, nos. 820 and 821) Series From the jacket copy: "it is fortunate that Defoe lived when he did [c.1660-1731], and that he was conscientious enough to find out what the individual village and town life of his day were like. What Defoe presents for the reader (as well as for the historian) is an England on the eve of change, and a partial transfer of power from the favoured large landowning class to the bustling, urgent merchants of world trade."
