Red cloth with black lettering, internally fine. NF/NF. Major Arthur Neve (1858-1919) was Surgeon to the Kashmir Medical Mission. His brother, Dr. Ernest Frederic Neve (1861- ) was also a long-time medical missionary in Kashmir. Both were veteran trekkers who wrote about both their trips and Kashmir generally. This guidebook, started by the one in the late 1880s and carried on by the other probably until his death (date unknown), and from then on till about 1945 by The Civil & Military Gazette establishment. The C&MG apparently had or inherited the copyright or publishing rights. Though undated, from internal evidence the composition of this edition dates to about 1945/46 though it may not have been printed then? The key to its printing lies in the dates the 2 C&MG staff people mentioned, i.e., E.G. Tilt who wrote the Preface and P. Heal who is listed as Manager of the C. & M.G, Ltd., were employed by the C&MG. For some reason no copies of it are held by The British Library, Library of Congress, NYPL or any of the academic libraries of OCLC. It is by far the longest running guidebook to Kashmir. Allan, Dogra, Warikoo and Yakushi all mention earlier editions.
