About This Item
1831 Traditions of Lancashire Pendle WITCHES Witchcraft Mab's Cross John Dee
John Roby's "Traditions of Lancashire" is a 19th-century study in English folklore. Originally published in 1829, this work offers stories of folk tales most of which were only ever available through the 'oral tradition'. In fact, Roby claimed to be a collector of oral folk tales and published them under this title. From the first edition:
"It was Roby's object to perpetuate these interesting relics of the past, and to present them in a form that may be generally acceptable."
The book was popular throughout England in the 19th-century, as readers craved learning of local legends and mythologies. Note the impressive full-page engravings included in this 1831 edition, second series.
