The page block is 1 1/8 inches thick; the title page is integrally bound (not tipped in); first state frontispiece portrait (with facsimile autograph one and seven-sixteenths inches wide). Title-page printed in red and black. Hardcover has brown cloth-covered boards with gilt spine and cover lettering and ornate black stamped decorations. Black and white frontispiece with tissue guard. Marginal illustrations throughout. 432 pages. NOT ex-library. Binding cracked in front of frontispiece; webbing visible, but pages not loose; there is another light binding crack near the center. Corners and spine ends bumped and rubbed, with some fraying at tips and spine ends. Covers have light surface and edge wear. Spine somewhat darkened. Pages lightly tanned, more so at periphery, but still supple. Some pages have light handling smudges. Three pages are dog-eared. Four pages have a small tear in the bottom margin. No dust jacket. Carefully packed, shipped in a box. This item will be shipped with signature confirmation required.

Haycraft-Queen cornerstone; featuring the first fictional use of fingerprints. This novel successfully straddled two literary traditions. The recurrent (in the 19th century and earlier) theme of mistaken identity or mixed up birth (i.e. this author’s own earlier book The Prince and the Pauper) is resolved in this story by the very modern forensic science employing fingerprints.
