Presentation copy, with inscription in recipient's hand on the front pastedown: "John R.P. Kirby, From the Author," followed by a bibliographical note. The 1869 Hotten edition of English bibliographer and piracy printer Richard Herne Shepherd's (1842-1895) poems opens with three translations from Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal: "A Carcass," "Weeping and Wandering," and "Lesbos." Swinburne's review of Les Fleurs du Mal in the Spectator (6 September 1862) first introduced Baudelaire to a wide English readership, but the first English translations of Baudelaire in book form did not appear until this 1869 volume, incidentally issued by Swinburne's publisher, John Camden Hotten. The 1869 edition was extended with two supplements adding a further 15 poems by Shepherd. The supplements, bound-in here at the end, comprise signatures G & H and are continuously paginated, extending the volume from 88 to 112 pages. According to the bibliographical note on the front pastedown, the particulars of which were undoubtedly supplied by Shepherd himself, of the first supplement, pages 89-104, fifty copies were printed, and of the second, pages 105-112, only 30 copies. Shepherd has filled-in the contents leaf in manuscript listing the additional 15 poems included in the supplements. In 1879 Pickering issued Translations using sheets of the 1869 first edition, the second supplement (signature G), and a re-set signature H. An uncommon title.
