About This Item
New York: Schocken Books, 1973. Rare title 8vo size green clothbound hardcover with dust jacket; 347 pages with a section of illustrations. From jacket: "Confined within the bounds of language that was widely believe to be incapable of expressing series thought - philosophical, spiritual, poetic, or emotional - the early Yiddish writers sought truth in the dense thickets of irony, satire, pseudonymic authorship, and especially in the use of the literary persona. Caught between the censure of the maskilim, or Hebraist leaders of the Haskala, the Jewish Enlightenment, and their own uneasiness with the "deformed" and "ludicrous" Yiddish language, as many of the best writers actually believed it was, they nonetheless persevered to produce a body of stories, novels and plays of startling freshness and complexity." Ex-temple library with typical treatments; jacket covered with mylar; cello tape used to hold on jacket has discolored and left dark transfer tan marks on inside covers and endpapers. There is some discoloration to the green cloth boards at top and bottom edge and some light foxing on top of book. . Cloth. Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Ex-Library.
