About This Item

New Have, 1821. Four volumes. Map. Original boards. Boards uniformly worn, front board of first volume held by a single cord. Map in fourth volume detached, titlepage of first volume torn with loss of upper outer corner, affecting two letters in first word of title. Overall, a good set. Untrimmed. In slipcases, gilt stamped spines (head of slipcase of second volume split). One of the classics of American travel and descriptive literature, probably the best description of New England in the early 19th century. It encapsulates Dwight's travels over several decades, with excellent descriptions of most of the major sites and towns. HOWES D612
