All edges yellow. 10 1/4 x 8 1/8 inches (26 x 20.5 cm) Collated: xii, [383], [1] [32] pp.; xiv, 368, [28] pp.; portrait, folding map and 8 plates (one folding plate, 'A View of the Karree Mountains with Ostriches and Quaggas,'). Some toning, spotting. First printed as 1810, Reisen im sudlichen Afrika, translated from the original German by Anne Plumptre. Lichtenstein was tutor to the son of Governor Janssens of the Cape Colony. Lichtenstein criticized Barrow's account of his travelers, accusing him of being 'totally unacquainted with the general habits and mode of life of the colonists...' Lichtenstein travelled with the Governor through the interior. Bushmen and Bechuanas are described and the information about the wild life and their natural surroundings is recorded in detail. Includes vocabularies of Karoo and Hottentot in the appendices. Mendelssohn I, p. 899.
