Printed for J. Debrett, 1800. Hardcover. First quarto edition. Quarto. Recent quarter calf over marbled boards. Title and author gilt-stamped on maroon onlays, other compartments decoratively gilt-tooled. xl, 730, [12], [1], [1]. One frontispiece and twenty-eight engravings. Half-title, frontispiece, and all plates heavily damp stained. There is also light to moderate foxing of these pages, as well as light bleedthrough. Other pages remarkably bright and clean inside, with three damp stains appearing to the text edges. The margins of the book have been cut, but portions of three leaves have been cut and folded over to preserve some rather interesting marginal notes made by a previous owner. A fine binding, very good plus text, and good plates. Sonnini travelled though Egypt between 1777 and 1778 by order of Count Buffon. He comments particularly on matters of natural history, but also discusses local customs and antiquaria.

Old (probably contemporary) leather which has been rebacked with worn portions of old backstrip mounted. 28cm. Cover edges worn. Backstrip and adjacent areas darkened. Moderate foxing and wear on plates and map. Many prefer this larger format single volume in English to the smaller format 1799 edition in 3 volumes. Sonnini devotes a couple of pages (at 162-164) to pederastic practics and a bit more space to female circumcision (at pages 263-265).

1800 1st English ed Sonnini Travels in EGYPT Egyptian Sexuality ArchaeologyCharles Sigisbert Sonnini was a French naturalist who served Louis XVI and under the Napoleonic Regime. In 1777, Sonnini was ordered by the king and Count Buffon to explore Egypt, a voyage that lasted three years. According to Blackmer's 'Sotheby's Catalogue',
"Sonnini set out with baron de Tott's expedition in 1777. On arrival at Alexandria he found orders to explore Egypt from Louis XVI awaiting him. This he proceeded to do, going on to Turkey, Greece, Crete and the Archipelago. He returned to Manoncourt in 1780 where he cultivated many new vegetables and herbs, his interest in natural history is evident from the number of plates in the above work showing plants and fish; indeed Sonnini collaborated with Buffon on an edition of the latter's works.
