Some pen on first free endpaper but pages clean and binding square.. 256 pages. Young adult novel by author of The Adventures of Peter, South with Scott and Keeping the Seas. With color frontispiece illustration by Norman Ellis: "The boy saw the flash of the knife as the nigger made to sever the trace which supported his weight." Evans was second-in-command to Robert Falcon Scott on expedition to the South Pole in 1910-1913. Approx 5 by 8 inches.

Hardback, 1932, first edition, published by The Junior Literary Guild and Farrar & Rinehart, Inc., New York, 310 pages.











Measures around 8 3/8" by 5 3/4" by 1 1/4". No dust jacket. Dark blue cloth binding, red lettering and pictorial detail to front board, red lettering to spine. Discolouration and heavy scuffing to spine. A little scuffing and marking to boards. Rubbing and signs of shelf-wear, tearing and fraying to spine edges. Some slackness to binding but reasonably firm overall. Page fore-edges deckled, upper edges with red hue. Some marking and scuffing to page edges, a little tanning. A little staining to first few pages. Previous owner pencil inscription to front pastedown but otherwise page surfaces clean, no underlining, marginalia, etc. See pictures for further information.

Hardcover in silver paper-covered boards lettered in red and decorated in blue with image of galleon under full sail. 311 pp. plus 4 pp. publisher's adverts. Four full page illustrations in color and haed pieces in black and white by Stanley Rogers. A tight example, modest rubbing to the extremities and with scattered foxing to the edegs of the text block as well as the first few and final few leaves. A sea adventure/suspense novel compete with pirates, treasure, intrigue, "Terror Island", etc. Vice Admiral Sir Edward "Teddy" Evans was a noted Antarctic explorer, sent by the Roya Navy on a relief mission for the Discovery Expedition of 1901-04. He later was Scott's second in command and captain of the Terra Nova during the ill fated expedition to the South Pole in 1910-13.
